As a history major at Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ, you’ll acquire skills and knowledge that can prepare you for a variety of careers in fields including teaching, law, government service, writing, researching, genealogy, business and politics. Perhaps most importantly, however, you’ll achieve a better understanding of the world and its people.

Earning a history degree at Alvernia can also prepare you for graduate school. History graduates have been accepted into a variety of graduate programs, including law, business and medical, at institutions such as Carnegie Mellon University, Penn State University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Literature does more than prepare students for careers in a variety of fields; it equips learners with skills that are crucial to success in any endeavor. A traditional liberal arts major, Alvernia's Literature program offers students opportunities for self-knowledge and growth as they explore the ideas of great writers of past and present. Reading those works promotes development of high level communication skills while enhancing depth of knowledge across disciplines. Interpreting and deconstructing ideas helps students to shape their world-views while refining skills in logic, reasoning and conceptual analysis.

The Psych/MACC degree is designed for students who wish to become ethical professional counselors skilled in treating mental health and addiction disorders. The psychology major can be followed as a 3+3 curricular track leading to potential matriculation into the MACC program in the senior year.

The Master of Education in Special Education prepares educators who hold another teaching certification to be successful in a variety of inclusive special education classroom settings. Coursework that focuses on young students with special needs such as learning disabilities, social/emotional disorders, and autism in combined with coursework in technology, literacy and teaching strategies and methods for the instruction of students.

The Master of Education with Principal (PK-12) Certification Program is designed to enhance the scholarly and professional development of classroom teachers who aspire to gain an administrative position. The program prepares future educational leaders to interact successfully with students, teachers, parents, school board members, and the community at large. The program prepares educators to meet the Pennsylvania Principal (PK-12) Certification requirements. Students graduate with a Master of Education degree and Principal Certification which gives a strong impetus to their career development.

The Master of Education with Special Education Certification (Grades PK-12) Program prepares educators for a master's degree with Pennsylvania certification in special education. This program is for educators who hold another teaching certification and would like to be successful in a variety of inclusive special education classroom settings. To enhance their understanding of working with children with various abilities and disabilities, students are required to complete classroom field experiences, pre-student teaching, and six weeks of student teaching.

Alvernia students have an opportunity to earn college credit by spending a semester or summer in Washington, D.C., competing on the Mock Trial Team, serving as interns in a congressional office, government agency, major corporation, newspaper or news network, or agencies devoted to legal affairs, international relations, or business and economics.
